Burnout is Not a Badge of Honour: Why Overwork is Killing Culture

ree

Once upon a time, “busy” was a badge of honour. Leaders bragged about back-to-back meetings, 80-hour weeks, and sacrificing sleep for success. Hustle culture was celebrated, even glamorised.

But let’s be honest, that badge is now a warning sign. Overwork doesn’t prove commitment anymore. It proves that something’s broken.

The Problem With Hustle Culture

When leaders glorify busyness, they send three dangerous signals:

  1. Exhaustion equals effort. Long hours get rewarded, even if they deliver little impact.

  2. Boundaries don’t matter. “Always on” becomes the expectation, blurring work and life.

  3. Wellbeing is optional. Anyone who can’t keep up is labelled weak or disengaged.

This isn’t just unsustainable, it’s toxic. And the data backs it up. Gallup found that employees experiencing burnout are 2.6 times more likely to actively seek another job. In Australia, burnout is a leading factor in the surge of psychological injury claims.

Culture on the Line

When burnout is normalised, culture corrodes:

  • Innovation dries up as people are too tired to think creatively.

  • Trust erodes as employees feel used, not valued.

  • Engagement collapses, and top talent walks.

Leaders may think they’re getting more out of their people. In reality, they’re draining the very energy they depend on.

The Leadership Shift

Courageous leaders flip the script. They stop celebrating busyness and start rewarding impact. They ask not, “How late did you stay?” but “What progress did you make?”

Three ways to begin:

  1. Redefine Success: Make outcomes, not hours, the measure of performance.

  2. Model Boundaries: Take leave. Log off. Show your team that recovery is part of high performance.

  3. Celebrate Smart Work: Call out moments where people achieved more by working smarter, not longer.

Final Thought

Busyness isn’t a badge. It’s a blindfold. Leaders who keep wearing it won’t just burn out themselves, they’ll burn out their culture.

The leaders who thrive will be those who dare to say: “Enough with the hustle. Let’s lead with clarity, courage, and care.”
