What's Your Leadership Brand Saying About You?

Updated: Jul 8

When it comes to becoming a courageous leader, there are 3 essential elements: clarity, confidence, and conviction.

If you think of it as a pyramid, you need clarity as the foundation, confidence for the buffer in between, and conviction to achieve self-awareness. Leadership is an inside-out job and it definitely starts from self-awareness.

Having clarity on the type of leader you are is paramount. Once you get clarity on the type of leadership you currently have, the next step is thinking of what type of leader you want to be, then seeing how to bridge that gap from where you are now to where you want to be as a leader.

Getting clarity on the leader you want to be

Self-awareness is the foundation of a good leader. When you understand what leadership style works best for you and your team, it's much easier to be an effective leader.

The first step is to ask yourself what kind of leader you want to be and what kind of impact you want to make on others. Getting really clear on the vision of your own leadership style and identity is crucial.

Personal Leadership Branding

Once you get clear on your leadership style, your actions will follow. Your actions create your habits and form your leadership brand. Your brand is what you stand for and what you stand against. People will be drawn to work with you once you have an established reputation and brand.

A leadership brand conveys your identity and distinctiveness as a leader. It communicates the value you have to offer. If you have the wrong leadership brand for the position you have, then your work may not be as impactful as it can be. Developing and sharing your leadership brand lets your team and colleagues know who you are, what you stand for, and how you work.

Another essential factor of leadership is your leadership identity. This can be different from our social identity but affects how we lead. The 3 rings around your leadership identity are social, chosen, and inner core identity - each one affecting the other.

In Conclusion

Whether you are leading a small group or a large organization, the leadership style you implement can greatly impact the effectiveness of your efforts as a leader. Although there are several types of leadership, the most effective one depends on you and your team. But getting clear on your leadership style and brand is an essential tool to effectively communicate with others.
